Because of a delay in the electronic batch posting of transactions on Monday night, some Chase bank accounts were not credited with deposits as they should have been, a bank spokesman said.
The problem affected a “small percentage” of customers, and all deposits will be fully credited Tuesday night, said the spokesman, Tom Kelly. Any fees incurred because of the disruption will be automatically refunded, he said.
One affected customer was Valerie Pires, a New York resident, who told Bucks that she saw a deposit for $2,000 appear in her Chase online checking account Monday night. But when she returned to her account later to pay some bills, the funds were nowhere to be seen. “I looked again, and it was gone,” she said. “It was bizarre.”
She said that when she called the bank to inquire about the funds, a bank representative told her that thousands of accounts had been affected. (The Chase spokesman said he couldn’t further quantify the number of customers affected.)
Typically, deposits made during the day are credited temporarily, then are replaced with permanent credits when transactions are posted overnight. In this case, according to Mr. Kelly, the temporary deposits were not made permanent as they usually are.
