Economix: Dogonomics

If this doesn’t convince Congress that there’s an unemployment crisis, I don’t know what will.

Now even dogs are getting pink slips, Time reports:

A harsh economic climate has negatively affected cities and municipal services across the country. But the downturn hit home for a five-year-old German Shepherd named Daro earlier this month.

Daro, a police dog for the East Haven Police Department in Connecticut, was forcibly retired after the town council cut his budget. As the only police dog in the E.H.P.D., Daro’s early retirement has angered the town’s police union and some citizens, according to The New Haven Register.

DESCRIPTIONJennifer Graylock/Associated Press Leona Helmsley and Trouble in New York in January 2003.

In other canine economic news, Leona Helmsley’s Maltese, Trouble, to whom Ms. Helmsley bequeathed $12 million, has passed away. I made a crack on Twitter about how odd it was that The Daily News of New York repeatedly called Trouble “one of” the world’s richest dogs. But a fellow Twitter poster responded that there are, apparently, even wealthier dogs. (You thought inequality among humans was bad.)

In any case, Trouble’s inheritance has reverted to the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.
