Just weeks after unveiling its new logo – a bird in flight – Twitter crashed to earth on Thursday. Its site seemed to be up and down for a good portion of the day. A company blog post had this to say: “Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.” Later the company added: “The issue has been resolved and all services are currently operational.” That sentence was then scrubbed and replaced with: “The issue is on-going and engineers are working to resolve it.”

Apica, a provider of performance monitoring for Web sites, said Twitter’s home page began showing errors as early as 9:33 a.m. New York time before going down completely.

Service resumed shortly after 11 a.m., and Twitter posted a brief explanation shortly after 3 p.m.: “Today’s outage is due to a cascaded bug in one of our infrastructure components.”

Twitter was notorious for technical glitches early in its existence, but the service has recently been more reliable.

A day earlier, Twitter signaled its ambition to rev up revenues, by expanding advertising opportunities in Europe and Latin America. The company made the announcement at a press conference on the sidelines of the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, where Jack Dorsey, a co-founder of Twitter, was named media person of the year.
