College students, in their words

Last week, we relaunched The Edit, a New York Times newsletter for college students and recent graduates. As part of that revamp, 13 college contributors were selected — from 20,000 — as correspondents. They include Ebony Miranda, a graduate of Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, who questions in an essay whether the #MeToo movement also stands for those who fall outside the gender binary. Since 1851, the vast majority of obituaries in The New York Times have been about men. This year, we began a series called Overlooked in which we are writing the obituaries for the women who never got them. This week, we remember Melitta Bentz, the inventor of the coffee filter.
